General

Other heating technologies are available, why use MxL?

Experience has shown that other methods of heating have a short life down-hole. We have systems running for 5 years and more. In addition the data logging provides research and evaluation potential.

Does Madis need to be called in for a workover?

Local personnel can be trained for installation and work-over maintenance. Madis personnel are available in more complicated situations.

Our well is waxy, foamy, pumped off, high water cut, etc. Will heating help?

There are situations where heating has no effect. If there is no drive pressure then heating isn’t very effective. If the oil is foamy then there are some heating regimes which can be effective. Heating can improve the oil cut in wells with a high water cut, however, in our experience the amount of produced water does not diminish but the oil cut improves. Waxy and heavy oils are our specialty, we have seen great improvement in both of these scenarios.

Installation

How long does an installation take?

A typical install can take between 1 to 2 days for the ITA to be completed. PCU configuration and calibration can take another 1 to 2 days depending on how much noise is present in the supplied power. Training 12 people on theory, operation and maintenance takes approximately 1 day.

Why are 20 foot lifting straps required for tool handling?

Having 2 20 foot straps attached at the 1/4 points keeps the stresses on the Inductor Tool Assembly at a minimum while it is angled into the derrick. It also reduces the chance a strap can slip past the dog collar during lifting.

PCU

Are there rental PCU systems available for evaluation of a well?

Yes, rentals of PCU systems reduce the initial cost of a full system while allowing evaluation of potential production enhancement. A portion of the rental cost is applied towards the purchase of a full system.

What is the maximum KVA size for a PCU?

Typical PCU systems can be 25, 75, 100, 125, 300 and 540 KVA systems, longer horizontal SAGD replacement/augment systems are in the order of 1 to 2.4 mega-Watts.

What sorts of power sources can be used for the PCU?

The system can run off mains power supplied to the site. A generator or co-gen unit of sufficient size will also work. It is important to note the power must match the type of system. ie. A 3 phase PCU requires 3 phase power plus a neutral to the supply transformer to avoid unbalanced operation at lower power settings.

How do I reset the PCU if an interlock has tripped?

Clear the cause of the interlock and turn Hand/Off/Auto to Off then back to the original position.

Does the PCU have an explosion proof rating?

We recommend the PCU be placed outside the hazardous area as they are not rated as explosion proof. Typically this is a minimum of about 75 feet, however, regulations may vary and should be followed.

Inductor Tool Assembly (ITA)

Are there rental ITAs available for evaluation of a well?

We are currently evaluating this potential. There has been much interest in rental ITAs however the difficulty arises with the variation in formations, production zones and power requirements. Currently each ITA is customized on a well by well basis.

Can the MxL system be used in gas wells?

The MxL Induction Heater can mitigate hydrate formation in gas wells.

What diameter of ITA are available?

Currently our smallest ITA is 3 1/2 inch. Our standard sizes are 3 1/2 inch and 4 1/2 inch. Designs for larger than 4 1/2 and our smallest size 2 7/8 inch are in progress.

What is the maximum temperature rating of the ITA?

The current maximum temperature our connectors and feed-throughs have been tested to 300 °C. The maximum temperature varies depending on requirement, for example, a waxy well the temperature requirement is much lower which reduces the power used and also the high temperature materials used in construction thus reducing overall cost.

What is the maximum length of the ITA?

A typical ITA is between 10 to 12 meters depending on requirement. We have built vertical segmented systems several hundred meters in length. Horizontal systems can approach 1000 meters with intermediate spacer sections.

MxLVPS2

Where do I put the dat files?

The DAT files are typically zip compressed and can be left in the storage folder created at install. The software has an option to copy the DAT file upon opening with MxLVPS2. If selected the file will be copied from the sdcard into the storage folder and then opened.

MxLVPS2 says my zip file is corrupt, what can I do?

Check the sdcard to ensure it is viable, if not replace with a new one formatted to FAT. If the DAT file was obtained remotely enfure the download was instigated by “t” followed closely by “m” to get a compatible format of DAT. Attempt to open the file with a archive program such as WinZIP or 7-Zip and then extract the DAT manually into your storage folder.

What versions of windows are compatible with the MxLVPS2 software?

The software has been tested on all current versions of windows from XP to 8.1. For 64 bit system it is recommended to install as an administrator and ensure the 64 bit version of Dat2Txt is being utilized. (D2T64.exe) Also, selecting run as administrator in compatibility settings on MxLVPS2.exe is recommended.

How do I change a setting on the setting tabs?

Double click the text box you wish to change. Dialogues will open with options for changing settings.

How can data be imported into a spreadsheet?

Use the DAT to TXT tab and select the file you wish to process. This will output 4 text files delimited per the settings. These files can be imported into your spreadsheet. Sections of the grids can be highlighted by clicking ‘Enable Copy Mode’ and then selecting which cells you wish to copy. Right clicking the selection and selecting ‘Copy’ or hitting ‘ctrl-c’ places the selected info on your clip-board.
